As a manufacturer who often talks about ” Gaming”, MSI has recently officially introduced game monitors to China after successively introducing GAMING mainboard, video card, game book and electronic competitive peripherals. today’s unpacked Optix MPG27CQ (hereinafter collectively referred to as MPG27CQ) is the first electronic competitive game monitor listed by microstar in China.
As can be seen from the parameter table, MPG27CQ uses a 27-inch WQHD 2560*1440 resolution curved surface VA screen with a curvature of 1800R, a refresh rate of 144Hz and a response time of 1ms, which are basically standard for the introduction of electronic competitive displays.
According to the author’s experience, the exterior colors of game monitors are usually bright and grandiose, and MPG27CQ is not immune from customs, so I will not describe them here.
Display accessories include power adapter, power cord, USB 3.1 Gen1 Type A to Type B data cable, composite analog audio cable, HDMI 2.0 and Displayport 1.2 data cable.
The self-contained adapter has an output power of 90W, which is even better if it can be integrated into the display.
The base of the monitor is designed with triangular boomerang. The line looks slim, but it is heavy to hold on the hand and takes up a lot of desktop space.
The bracket and the base are fixed by a screw.
After the support is combined with the base, it provides the functions of lifting, tilting angle adjustment and horizontal rotation.
Wire holes are reserved on the bracket and the base. I think it would be more ideal to add a movable earphone rack.
The accessory is followed by the display body, from which the degree of curvature of the curved surface can be seen. 1800R this curvature is still quite common on curved surface displays. It is worth mentioning that the five light bars at the bottom of the display screen can display the information in the game through the GameSense function in cooperation with SteelSeries.
Compared with the relatively simple front of the display, the lines on the back of the display are quite complicated, in which the middle of the back is the mounting position of the display bracket, and a VESA wall hole of 100*100mm is also provided to support the mounting of the third-party bracket.
From left to right, the ports on the back of the monitor are respectively power input, HDMI 2.0*2 and a Displayport 1.2 interface, while the USB 3.1 Gen1 interface and the composite audio interface on the right provide USB HUB and analog audio output for the monitor after connecting to the host.
Tool-free installation is used between the bracket and the monitor body, and the installation method is almost the same as that of the monitor bracket commonly used by DELL.

The top left and right three sides of the front of the display are designed with micro-frames. The anti-glare foggy screen is almost integrated with the frame after the screen is closed. The advantage of micro-frame plus curved screen is to minimize the damage of the frame to the continuity of the screen when multiple screens are spliced. I believe everyone knows this.
The power button is located in the lower right corner of the screen and feels rather fleshy. It can only be triggered by pressing it harder. Is this a design to avoid misoperation?
The aforementioned LED light bar can display the information in the game through the GameSense function, and can also be used as an atmosphere light to synchronize with devices that support MSI Mystic Light lighting effects. In addition, the angle of the light source is slightly inclined toward the table top, and it will not directly hit the eyes. Of course, if you really don’t like light pollution, you can turn it off.
A close-up of the back of the display shows that the entire back is divided into three pieces by two lines. The upper piece is made of imitation metal wire drawing texture, while the middle piece is made of high-gloss injection plastic. The dividing line between the upper and middle areas is also a hidden heat dissipation hole.
Compared with high-gloss injection molding, the metal-like wiredrawing texture process is more stain-resistant, especially when the screen angle is adjusted, mud and oil on the hand can be prevented from being brought to the top of the display. However, since the LED lamp supporting the GameSense function is integrated in the middle position of the back, the use of high-gloss injection molding material is probably a compromise.
The OSD menu of the display is controlled by a five-dimensional joystick. Friends who have used Nokia classic mobile phones should not be unfamiliar with this operation mode and are very suitable for blind operation with one hand. However, it is also well known that the service life of the joystick is not as long as that of ordinary keys. However, this display can directly set OSD through software after connecting USB cable, which can greatly reduce the use frequency of the joystick and make the operation experience more convenient. This function can be shared later.
In terms of ergonomic design, I believe every friend who has played video games has profound experience. When playing games, he is totally absorbed and forgets the time. It is common for him to sit in front of the computer for several hours carelessly. If the angle or height of the display is not appropriate and the user needs to adjust the sitting position to cater to it, it is really hard to play for a few hours, so I personally am quite concerned about whether the electronic competition display has ergonomic design. The MPG27CQ screen can be raised and lowered within the range of 0-120mm by using the support provided by the display.
Tilt angle adjustment support-5 ~ 20.
Horizontal rotation support-40 ~ 40. There are few occasions when vertical screen display is required for the video game display, so it is not a big problem not to support screen rotation.
After unpacking the case and introducing, the display is powered on and on.
The light bar at the bottom of the screen is the rainbow light effect by default, commonly known as monkey light.
As mentioned earlier, the base of the monitor occupies a relatively large position. I think the ideal placement method is to place it in the upper left corner or upper right corner of the table, and then rotate the screen. Of course, if there is enough space on the table top or if there is an upper support, this problem is not considered at all.
Let’s talk about software. With Gaming OSD software, you can set up the display by clicking the mouse in the system. Compared with the traditional OSD menu, setting up OSD through software is not only intuitive but also faster. However, this function can only be realized after the host computer is connected to the display through a USB cable.
According to different usage scenarios and even different games, different screen parameter settings can be used under different applications by creating new configuration files.
In addition, there is another function that I think is more practical. The screen parameters are directly set on the keyboard through the user-defined shortcut keys. Because the software can run in the background, there is no need to quit the game midway or press the display button separately.
In addition, it is mentioned that the shortcut keys on the joystick also support customization. In fact, I think it may be more convenient to integrate the power switch here, so that the front of the display looks more symmetrical and coordinated.
In addition to the Gaming OSD software, this monitor also supports the GameSense of SteelSeries, which is certainly familiar to users who use SteelSeries peripherals. Through cooperation with Steel Series, MPG27CQ can also set the LED light effect at the bottom of the screen through the software, and support breathing light and other effects in addition to the normally bright and rainbow light effects.
The light controllable areas on the front and back of the display are divided into seven major areas in total, and each area on the front contains eight LED pixel points which can be independently set.
The back of the display also supports a single LED lamp to set the lamp effect independently.
Here is a simple demonstration of the default rainbow light effect.
If the LED on the display can only be used as an atmosphere light, it is a bit overqualified. Through SteelSeries Engine, it can also interact with supported games. Simply speaking, it can read the game data and then use RGB LED lights to display relevant information. Currently, the function only supports three games, namely ” CS:GO”, ” Dota 2″ and ” My World”. At present, hot chicken eating is not supported, which is a pity. Whether more games can be added later depends on the efforts of SteelSeries and MSI. As long as the license of the game manufacturer can be obtained, it will be easy to handle later.
Let’s take CS:GO as an example to show the effect of GameSense and set RGB LED light bars as corresponding functions.
The setting of the function is not limited to one set of LEDs. If you like, you can combine two or more sets of LED lights to display one content.
In addition, the color of LED also supports customization in the game, and flashing lights can be set to achieve the maximum prompt effect.
The LED lights on the back of the screen also support the display of game data, but the feeling is that the role of decoration and setting off the atmosphere is more than practical.
To demonstrate the actual effect, five groups of light bars from left to right are respectively set to the life value, the number of rounds of enemy annihilation, the number of matches of enemy annihilation, the ammunition surplus and the armor value, which is the situation at the beginning.
After being beaten with residual blood, the corresponding light bar indicates the state in the game in the previously set form and color.
Then the ammunition surplus indication will be shortened with the reduction of the ammunition quantity. When there is little ammunition left, a flashing prompt will be given to change the cartridge. Although most of the time in the game, I am still used to looking directly at the values displayed on the screen, but sometimes when the battle is especially fierce, I may only use the time to sweep the LED out of the corner of my eye, and this function can come in handy at this time.
The game experience tested three popular shooting games, and the test platform is shown in the following figure.
The graphics card is from msgtx1080tiGaming xtrio, and the Boost Clock/Base Clock in gaming mode is 1657 MHz/1544 MHz respectively, slightly higher than the public version.
3DMark FSE scored a total of 13000+.
The default refresh rate of MPG27CQ is already 144Hz. It is not necessary to turn on relevant functions in OSD, just select 144Hz in the system property-refresh rate setting. The monitor itself also comes with AMD FreeSync technology. Its goal is to provide a smoother game experience, reduce input delay, prevent picture tearing, etc. AMD FreeSync uses DisplayPort’s adaptive synchronization standard to manage the refresh rate of the display with the help of the video card to solve the problems of picture tearing and caton caused by out-of-sync between the display and the video card. However, it is no good for me to use N cards. If the resolution of 2K is to run at 144Hz, the requirement for the host is not low. First try CS:GO, a game with relatively low requirement, which has the highest direct picture quality. There is no pressure at 144Hz throughout the game, including no drop in the number of frames under smoke bombs.
144Hz compared with 60Hz, the whole picture will feel smoother and the feeling of shooting with a gun is not so floating. No matter whether there is improvement in level or not, there is improvement in confidence anyway. Ha ha.
It is convenient to mention that a hard sight can be set in the screen assistant and there are different styles to choose from. Hard sight, like OSD menu, is directly displayed on the screen and is not affected by changes in screen content.
Hard sight in ” CS:GO” in the short and medium distance blind sniper is still a little help.
However, in the case that AWP has just opened the mirror and the sight is blurred during the moving process, this hard sight can help aim before the game sight becomes real, and mastering the timing of the sight change is key to improving the hit rate.
Next, try eating chicken. The highest picture quality at 2K resolution can run at 90~110 FPS. If 144Hz is stable, only medium picture quality can be selected.
Another popular shooting game, ” fortress night” can be regarded as a cartoon version of chicken-eating. the configuration requirements are not much lower than chicken-eating. the highest picture quality at 2K resolution is only about 110 FPS. reducing the first-level special effects can stabilize 144 FPS. Generally speaking, although the experience change of the latter two games after 144Hz is not as obvious as CS:GO, it is still helpful to improve the smoothness of the game picture, which is more obvious after 60Hz is replaced.
Since the functions of Gaming OSD have been shared before, the built-in OSD in the display will be simply introduced. Anyway, all functions here can be basically implemented by Gaming OSD software.
In addition to the high refresh and high response time mentioned earlier, which improves the game experience, the game modes included in the video game display will generally improve the brightness of the dark part. Simply put, it is easier to see the details of the dark part more clearly and find the enemies hiding in the dark. The following three screen shots are the default mode, FPS mode and competition mode respectively. FPS mode mainly highlights the picture and dark part, while competition mode further highlights the picture and has a sharpening effect similar to Photoshop. You can feel it from the screen shot comparison.
In addition, it also has the function of resisting blue light, which is turned off by default. After being turned on, the picture will turn yellow, which is suitable for reading. Whether it is turned on or not depends on individual needs.
Dual-signal simultaneous output supports picture-in-picture and content side-by-side display, suitable for some special use scenarios.
Finally, according to the routine of monitor evaluation, the objective performance of this monitor was measured with Starscream 5. This test is based on 6500K color temperature, brightness 120 and luminosity 2.2. By default, the preset color temperature of the display is obviously colder, and the picture color gives the impression of being bluer and brighter. This seems to be the usual training method for many video game displays and LCD televisions.
After color correction by red spider 5, it can reach a level close to 6500K ..
In terms of color gamut, the color gamut measured by Starscream 5 is 100% sRGB, 85% AdobeRGB and 82% NTSC. This color gamut has nothing to be picky about for game displays, but there is a big gap with NTSC 100％ % and sRGB 115％ % in the product introduction of Microstar. Later, after consulting, it was found that the manufacturer’s test is based on CIE 1976 color gamut standard, while the final result given by Starscream is based on CIE 1931 color gamut standard, so the difference in test standards also leads to the difference in results.
Photometric measurement is 1.9. The gray scale decreases from 0% to 50%, and becomes relatively stable after 50%.
The maximum brightness of the display is 400 cd/㎡, personal feeling is relatively comfortable for daily clerical application of 120-160, 250 or higher can be used for games, and the cold color temperature has little effect on games, but it is recommended to calibrate the color or select a custom color temperature for daily use.
The color uniformity test measures the color consistency of each area of the display, and the lower the numerical deviation, the better.
The brightness uniformity test is to measure the brightness consistency of each area of the display. The lower the numerical deviation, the better. In this respect, the VA panel is almost an IPS.
Color accuracy Delta-E can quantify the accuracy of color restoration into a numerical value, which can reflect the accuracy of the color displayed by the display. The smaller the numerical value, the better.
As for the visual angle, the official data is about 178, and the specific value is not measured by individuals, but only a side real shot can be given for your reference.
